What Do Boiler Efficiency Ratings Mean?
The one thing you want your boiler to be is efficient. An efficient boiler will keep your house and water heated without costing an arm and a leg to do so. Boiler efficiency ratings can be hard to decipher if you don’t know what you’re looking at. In this blog, we break down what the boiler efficiency rating system means and how you can check the rating of your boiler.
Boiler Efficiency Rating
Boiler efficiency ratings indicate how well a boiler converts fuel into heat for your home. The higher the rating, the more efficient the boiler and the less energy it wastes. In turn, this means less money spent too.
ErP Efficiency Rating
The current system used to rate boiler efficiency is the ErP system, which stands for Energy-related Products. This system replaced the SEDBUK rating system in 2015 and it is the European rating for boilers and heating appliances.
The current ErP system uses a scale of A+++ to G, with A+++ being the most efficient and G being the least efficient.
Here’s a breakdown of the ErP ratings:
- A+++: Achieves over 90% efficiency (very low energy waste)
- A++: Very efficient (around 90% efficiency)
- A+: Highly efficient (around 90% efficiency)
- A: Efficient (at least 90% efficiency)
- B: Reasonably efficient (around 86-90% efficiency)
- C: Less efficient (around 82-86% efficiency)
- D: Not very efficient (around 78-82% efficiency)
- E: Inefficient (around 74-78% efficiency)
- F: Quite inefficient (around 70-74% efficiency)
- G: Least efficient (below 70% efficiency)
SEDBUK Efficiency Rating
Before 2015 when ErP was introduced, boilers in the UK were ranked on the SEDBUK scale, or the The Seasonal Efficiency of a Domestic Boiler in the UK scale. You will still often find boiler manufacturers using the SEDBUK scale as it offers a more detailed look at the efficiency of boilers.
How to Check Boiler Efficiency
If you are unsure which rating your boiler falls under, you can usually find the ErP rating on a sticker found in the front panel. If your boiler is older and the sticker is missing, you should be able to search for the brand and model to find information relating to its efficiency rating.
Boiler Plus Legislation
It’s important to note that since April 2018, all new boilers sold and installed in the UK must have a minimum efficiency rating of A (at least 90% efficient) due to the Boiler Plus legislation. When shopping for a new boiler you should be fine to assume that a trusted supplier will provide you with a boiler that meets this boundary, however, for peace of mind you can ask directly.
