Boiler Warranty Guide

If you have invested in or are planning to invest in a new boiler, with your purchase you will receive a warranty. The warranty assures that the boiler you purchase is free from defects and should faults be found or develop within a certain window, the company will repair or replace the product free of charge.

Getting a good warranty on your product is a big part of the decision-making when choosing a boiler and getting a good one can protect you from shelling out further funds should something go wrong. To help you get to grips with the basics, we have put together a quick guide to boiler warranties, discussing what they cover, how long boiler warranties might be, and how to check if your current boiler is still under warranty.

What does a boiler warranty cover?

The terms of a boiler warranty will likely differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. They will set out a time period, five or 10 years for example, and what issues are covered by the warranty. This often is limited to any fault that can be attributed to the manufacturer of the equipment, such as mechanical or electrical faults, leaks etc. The warranty will also indicate what costs are covered – usually, the parts and labour are included here.

How does a warranty differ from a guarantee?

Generally, the rule of thumb is that a guarantee is a verbal promise, while a warranty is a formal written agreement. A guarantee is a promise from the manufacturer that the product you purchase is of high quality and that any issues that arise with it will be rectified by the manufacturer, so long as it is within the duration of the guarantee. They are free and included with the purchase of your boiler.

A warranty, on the other hand, is something you pay a premium for. They generally last longer than guarantees and are a legally defensible contract between manufacturer/supplier and buyer. Because they are legal agreements, they offer a greater degree of protection should something go wrong with your boiler.

Generally, however, neither a guarantee nor a warranty will give you cover on wear-and-tear and the effects of general usage.

How long are boiler warranties?

The length of warranties and options available will depend on the manufacturer of your chosen boiler, however, most boiler warranties will be 1-5 years. You might have the option to invest in an extended warranty, giving you coverage that is significantly longer. Some companies also offer warranty extensions on boilers that are regularly and properly serviced and maintained.

How to check if my boiler is under warranty

You can check if your boiler is still under warranty on the documentation it came with. These documents will contain information about the terms of your boiler warranty, its start date and its duration. Look for the expiration date to confirm if your boiler is still under warranty.

If you are unable to find this documentation, you can get in touch with the manufacturer. With the serial number of your boiler, they should be able to let you know if the boiler’s warranty is still in effect.
