A Homeowner’s Guide to Maintaining Your Heat Pump

At Warmaway, we’ve spent over 20 years perfecting our service in heat pump installation and maintenance. Whether you’ve installed a heat pump or are considering one, regular care can maximise efficiency and extend the lifespan of your system. Here’s our guide to help you keep your heat pump in top condition.

Air Source Heat Pump Maintenance

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are an excellent renewable option for heating your home, and with proper care, they can last for years. Here’s how you can maintain them.

Check for Debris

Since ASHPs are located outdoors, debris like leaves, dirt, or snow can accumulate on the unit. Check the area around the heat pump regularly and remove any obstructions to ensure proper airflow.

Clean the Coils

Dirty coils can reduce the system’s efficiency. Periodically, give the outdoor coils a gentle clean to remove dust or debris. You can do this by carefully hosing them down—avoid using high-pressure washers as they can damage the unit. If you have a heat pump maintenance plan with us, we’ll do this as part of your annual service

Monitor Air Filters

Your heat pump’s filters can become clogged with dust and dirt over time. Replace or clean them every 1-3 months to keep the system running smoothly and avoid unnecessary strain on the unit.

Inspect the Fan Blades

The fan blades on an ASHP can become worn or dirty. Shut off the power to the unit, and inspect the blades. Gently clean them, or if they appear damaged, contact us to replace them.

Annual Service

Just like your car needs regular servicing, your heat pump benefits from an annual check-up by professionals. As part of an annual heat pump service, we’ll inspect refrigerant levels, test the electrical components, and make sure your system is performing efficiently.

Ground Source Heat Pump Maintenance

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) tap into the stable temperatures underground, providing your home with consistent heat. Though they require less maintenance than air source systems, here’s how you can keep yours running optimally.

Check the Ground Loop Fluid

Your GSHP uses a water and antifreeze mixture to transfer heat. While it’s a closed-loop system, it’s important to check fluid levels periodically. Contact us to assess whether the antifreeze concentration is correct and if any top-ups are needed.

Monitor Pressure Levels

Your heat pump’s pressure gauge should stay within the recommended range. If you notice any drops, this could indicate a leak or an issue in the system. Call us if this occurs, as it may require a more in-depth inspection.

Flush the System

Ground source systems should be flushed by a professional  every 3-5 years to remove any sludge or blockages in the pipes. This keeps the heat transfer process as efficient as possible.

Clean Air Vents

Keep an eye on your indoor vents and radiators. Dust and dirt can accumulate, reducing airflow and efficiency. Regularly clean these areas to avoid unnecessary stress on the system.

Annual Service

An annual service ensures your ground source heat pump stays in excellent working condition. Our team will inspect the heat exchanger, check fluid levels, and ensure that the electrical system is functioning properly.

General Tips for Both Systems

Thermostat Settings

Ensure your thermostat is programmed for maximum efficiency. We recommend keeping the temperature consistent rather than making large adjustments throughout the day.

Noise Levels

Heat pumps are generally quiet, but if you notice unusual sounds such as banging or hissing, contact us to diagnose the problem before it escalates.

Energy Usage

If your energy bills suddenly spike without explanation, it may indicate that your heat pump isn’t operating efficiently. Our experts can help you determine the cause and recommend improvements.
